Make the Most out of Golf by Chris Hegi
Just admit it–you’re hooked. The golf courses in Portland offer you such a beautiful array of possibilities that is hard to say no. You are certainly not the only person who has ever experienced such an addiction. It might be time, though, to really evaluate how efficient you are being in all the different elements of this great hobby. The truth is that no matter where you go, a good golf game can cost you a good amount of money, besides the prices placed on equipment rentals and the use of a golf cart. All of these expenses can add up if you’re not careful. But if you want to make the most out of the golf courses in Portland, consider using some of the following tips:
Portland golf doesn’t have to be all about spending your money–it should be about being in nature, refining your skills, and finding satisfaction in your own personal progress. Thus, there are some changes that you can make to your golf game to improve the overall experience–including the cost. For example, you don’t always have to play at the country club–this can be expensive, although beautiful. There may be many other golf courses in Portland that offer a similar setup, or at least a fairly good opportunity to practice, without costing you quite as much for the game. You can take advantage of these less expensive golf courses to practice and play around, until you treat yourself to a game at the club on a special day, or with someone important.
But when those special games come around, see if you can’t make them on a weekday, instead of a weekend. Prices are usually up on weekends, because it is a popular time to play. However, by booking a time in advance, often through online services, you can get a prime time during the week for a less expensive price than you otherwise might.
If you love golf so much you just can’t get away, see if you can’t just find some sort of part time job at a golf course. Chances are that if that happens, you’ll be sure to find a discount you can use on equipment, rentals, and the game itself.
Make the most out of the incredible golf courses Portland, and do so in a way that will leave you–and the wife–satisfied. Try using some of these quality tips next time you get the urge to hit the green.

American Jobs $12.71 When independent filmmaker Greg Spotts heard that a staggering three million manufacturing jobs in the U.S. had simply disappeared between 2000 and 2003, he grabbed his camera and hit the road in hopes of documenting the effect this widespread cutback had on everyday workers firsthand. For the next six months, Spotts used his own funding to visit 19 cities and towns across the country and talk with the people most affected by these massive cutbacks. What followed was not only a remarkably personal look into the heart of the American workforce, but a profound statement on the undeniable impact of “global sourcing” on both blue- and white-collar families struggling to simply make ends meet in an increasingly competitive marketplace. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Find Your Right Job $8.39 There are certain occupations which each individual is more efficient at than any other. Psychologists tell us that we are all entitled to earn our bread at labor that is pleasing to us, and furthermore that we cannot be contented at any other kind. Economists tell us that the man who is happy at his work produces far more than his discontented neighbor, and does so with less effort and less fatigue. Everyone should, work at a job, occupation, or profession that he likes. Yet, inconsistent as it seems, eighty percent of the people of the world are dissatisfied with their jobs. The reader of these lines may be among the number. In brief, the work at which you are most efficient is the kind of work that you like to do and at which you can accomplish the most. It is likewise the work in which you can find the most happiness, make the most money, achieve the greatest measure of success, and do the most good for your fellow man. |

Service Success! Lessons from a Leader on How to Turn Around a Service Business $50 Nine out of every ten new jobs created each year are in the service sector. Although service jobs are at the heart of today’s economy, accounting for three-quarters of our GNP, there has not been, until now, a system that enables managers to accurately measure and improve service quality, productivity, and profitability. While manufacturing processes lend themselves to statistical measurement, the intangibles of quality service are much harder to quantify. In this book, Dan Kaplan – the man who dramatically transformed the money-losing Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation into the industry leader with an enviable profit margin – reveals the battle-tested methodologies he used in forging one of the recognized business success stories in the service field. Turnarounds in industry rarely come as 450-foot home runs, Kaplan explains. What is needed instead are 1,000 singles – the kind of steady incremental progress toward a goal that is responsible for most wins, in baseball and in business. In Service Success! Kaplan shows how, by deliberately employing a policy of small wins , leaders can bring people along with them as they challenge and move beyond the status quo, seeking always to make tomorrow better than today. |
